(KRON) -- The City of Alameda is taking steps to help fill empty storefronts on its two main commercial corridors, Park Street and Webster Street. On Tuesday, the city announced that the Alameda Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Monday, Oct. 26 to consider proposed zoning changes that would make it easier for businesses to open or expand along the corridors.

According to the city, the proposed changes would simplify the approval process for businesses, including retail, personal services, offices and other commercial uses. The zoning changes are part of a broader strategy to reduce the number of commercial vacancies on the island and encourage business activity by "identifying and removing unnecessary regulatory barriers."
The proposed amendments would update two zoning districts along with related sections of the Alameda Municipal Code. At the public hearing on Oct. 26, the planning board will consider the proposed amendments and make a recommendation to the city council.
The city council will then consider proposed changes before final adoption.
